Introduction to Hyperspectral Chemical Imaging

What? How much? and Where?

Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is a hybrid imaging technology combining imaging (spatial analysis) with spectroscopy (color analysis). This merging of conventional spatial imaging with traditional spectroscopic analysis methods was first introduced as satellite based imaging of the earth, moon, and other planets, but has recently seen a major shift in application area. This remote sensing technology has been brought down to earth: first to the analytical chemistry research and quality control laboratory, and more recently to the online process automation environment. From an analysis perspective, the fundamental spectroscopy enables determination of what and how much, whereas imaging enables the determination of where. The aim of this course is to provide participants with a basic hands on introduction to the theory and practical application of hyperspectral imaging (HSI), and specifically hyperspectral chemical imaging (HCI).

This imaging workshop will combine lectures and live demonstrations presenting some of the basic developments in HSI/HCI, and explore the extension of chemometrics to HCI image processing. Topics discussed will include basic instrumentation and imaging theory, exploratory image analysis, and modeling, image classification, and individual component quantification. Each topic session will begin with a mixture of basic theory and fundamental application results, followed by an interactive examination of class-room samples, using a HyperPro™ visible - near infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging system.
